Happy New Year + Share Your Shop/Craft!

Hey all! Wow, can't believe it's been several months since my last entry. I missed this place and you guys! 2015 is already here and it's nearly halfway through January. 2014 flew by so quickly it's hard to believe. I do hope you all had a wonderful new year and a lovely holiday regardless of what you celebrate. :)

I have been super hard at work these last few weeks. As winter has officially set in some time ago (and it's just so dang cold out) I'm no longer able to pop outdoors and take pictures. I've also come to see my old spot inside I used to try and take photos in wasn't doing my work any favors. So I've been making all these wonderful things and have had no way to share them. Only people who have seen me at my last few shows of 2014 ever got to see these new works! Recently I began to change all that.

I got together with my mom and she helped me whip up a nice big light box complete with 4 clamp lights. It's nothing fancy, but I have been so stoked to finally see that little glimmer of progress appearing on my horizon. Sadly it wasn't as easy as just point and click with my camera. It's been about 2 going on 3 weeks now I am just recently seeing results.

I will be working to revamp my shop as time goes on and I look forward to using some of my new techniques come spring when I get to go outside again. :)

Christmas in July! (Yes, It's That Time Already)

Another blog post you say? What?! Sorcery! Alas no, not quite! But Halloween is really just around the corner. Soon, my lovelies. Soon. ;)

But is is July and it's the 4th so...Happy Independence Day!

I hope you are all having a wonderful and safe day. I also hope you didn't have to work today and got to enjoy the day at home with your loved ones. It cooled down here significantly and I am enjoying the reprieve from the nasty, sticky heat. It rained (thanks in no small part to Hurricane Arthur I'm sure). Despite the cloudiness the rest of the weekend will be sunny albeit hot and probably sticky again. But for today I enjoyed my time indoors and playing around in my shop. My family postponed our BBQ plans until tomorrow so it all worked out.

But with July comes other things. What you ask? Well, Christmas in July of course! Music Mondays and Craft Show Woes

My post is a day late but better late than never! :)

Let me start this blog post off with something I think that could be fun to do. I'm a very open minded person and I have an addictive personality. I don't often get to share my personal life with my fans and followers and I'd like to change that a little bit.

I'm always striving to be more open. So to kick start this Monday morning I'm going to share with you one of my favorite musicians. I like a lot of music ranging from opera all the way to metal bands and Irish pub songs. I like to give everything a try at least once. This artist was introduced to me on a forum a few years ago and I was so blown away by this man's work that it inspired me in some of my story writing endeavors.

His name is Ed Alleyne-Johnson. He has a very unique instrument and it was one I had never heard of until I saw a video that was linked in the forum I belong to. I think his work is so haunting and beautiful. If you have an ear for classical pieces you may just like this musician and composer. Here is a video I found just searching for his name on Youtube. I happen to love the song he is covering!



Here he is playing live doing a song from his own CD called Ultraviolet.
I would love to see him playing live someday. I'm certain it's a life changing experience! What sort of music do you like to listen to? What music really inspires you?

Craft Shows from May

I've had two craft shows this month. Unfortunately unlike my first show back in March neither of these two worked out very well. I think the first show I attended on the 4th was just not advertised enough sign wise. There weren't any signs out on the main road leading to the venue. I also feel the crowd was just not right for what I was selling. I had more people wanting to buy my mannequin (Beverely) and her wig than I had interested in my jewelry or Vintage wares. They plan to have another show this September. I'm not certain if I'll attend again. There was very little structure to the show and it seemed a bit too much like a free-for-all. While I met some wonderful people I think a lot more planning needs to happen if future shows are to be successful. It just didn't feel like a vendor-friendly show.


My second show, on the 11th, didn't turn out well either. Unfortunately although this was the 8th year for this particular show the weather was forecast to have downpours and thunder storms for the entire day. Even though it didn't rain until the last half hour of the show I believe the potential for bad weather kept many from coming out. I am hopeful that next year will be better and I do look forward to giving this venue another chance. My only wish would be that they have a rain date for this show as it is unfair to their outdoor vendors that don't have the luxury of being located inside the main building. There was also a pet adoption held along with the craft show.

I had a lot of fun meeting all the dogs and cats looking for their forever homes. I was a little disappointed however that many of the handlers didn't seem to care where their dogs were dragging them around to or what the dogs were doing whenever they stopped to meet someone. One of the dogs happened to pee on one of the table skirts of the vendor selling across from me. Most of the handlers also would stop right in front of the vendor tents to talk with people walking by which I believe was a large deterrent to anyone who might have otherwise stopped by the vendor booths. It is difficult for people trying to shop while there are dogs jumping up their legs.

I am hoping that next year the weather is nicer and that perhaps the venue re-think where they place the pet adoption tables. While I support adopting shelter animals I think a lot more thought needs to go into keeping the dogs away from vendor booths. I certainly don't mind them walking by (I don't expect them all to be forced to sit still all day) but it certainly didn't help with sales for mine or any of the other vendors who were set up next to or between the pet adoption booths.

I did get the opportunity to snap some photos for both shows. I suppose that is the plus side to not having many shoppers coming by! lol

Pictured right is the jewelry half of my booth. We had it facing out toward the entrance to the parking lot where people would walk in.

 Pictured left is a front view of my booth. We had two racks of vintage clothing to each side as well as crates filled with vintage fabric. The table to the inside left of the booth had all of our other vintage items such as shoes, sewing patterns, and miscellaneous accessories like gloves and scarves.



And lastly here are two photos from my Skyline Lakes Fire Department Craft show on the 11th.

Pictured right is a front view of my table set up on Saturday May 11th. I had invested in some plastic table clothes and skirts (because of the predicted rain fall). I also acquired some green shower curtains to hang around the back and sides of the canopy. These did an excellent job of keeping the wind from knocking my displays over. I will be investing in some actual canopy curtains so that my set up looks more professional. I also plan to obtain some real table clothes and skirts as well.

Here you can see my best friend Michelle who spent the day with me. She was a huge help with setting up. You can also see that I've ditched all of my hang tags for my items. There was no tangled mess to sort through when it was time to pack up and leave. I also plan to update my little price signs that were placed with some of my items.

Last Minute Valentines Gifts Part 1

I know this post is so late. ): I apologize, the week was SO busy! I didn't get much response from people when I was asking others to share their treasuries to be featured so I had to find my own. I had fun looking through all these. You can bet I tweeted each and every one! :)

Craft Show Prep

Things are starting to get rather busy as the days are just flying by, counting down towards the day of the craft show! Believe it or not I am still trying to acquire some supplies for the show.

I'm still working on the shop and it's definitely tough trying to get things listed on Etsy while thinking ahead for what I will need come November 3rd. One of the things I have been stressing over is prepping one of my mannequins. I was lucky enough to acquire a full torso with head and realistic face through a Haunter (Halloween) friend. She came to me bald and has some minor damage plus paint peeling. My dilemma has been agonizing over whether I want to tackle trying to re-paint her. I'm just too in love with her current face and know that I can't make an exact re-painted copy of it (since every artist's style is different).

Instead, I opted to try and find a wig that could cover the paint peeling on her forehead and just a few weeks ago I found the perfect one. It shipped from China and I was worried it wouldn't arrive, but it just got here two days ago.

With all the rain we've had I had I wasn't able to get outside to take pictures of her until today.

My biggest concern is covering up her breasts. The person who owned her before me painted on nipples so I can't leave her naked. She also, sadly, did not come with arms or legs, so I have had a hard time locating a shirt for her to cover the holes in her arm sockets.

I'm definitely very happy with how she is coming along. I've seen many mannequins that don't have nearly as nice a face as this one does. A lot of the ones I have seen have that dopey/droopy eyed face coupled with an elongated facial structure that makes them look less realistic. Sadly, though, she still has no name.

In regards to shirts I found this awesome shop on Etsy called Couth Clothing. I've been talking with the shop owner, Daniel, and she's been a pleasure to work with. I've already picked out this shirt and this sheer top. Please go check out Daniel's Etsy shop, I assure you that you won't be disappointed! I'm also super excited to be show casing another Etsy artisan's work in my craft show display to help me in promoting my jewelry and accessories.

In other news please be aware that come November 3rd I will be putting my shops on Vacation. So if you have had your eye on any items in the shop don't hesitate! Whatever sells at the show will be removed from both my Etsy and Artfire shops before I make them active again. Only my Vintage sewing patterns and other Vintage items will remain unaffected. Any jewelry items, accessories, or other handmade items of mine will be subject to removal if I sell them at the show.

Happy Friday everyone! It's been a long week for me and as Fall approaches so does the impending date of my very first craft show. While exciting I am so nervous. There is so much that I still need to do, items that need to be made, and supplies that need to be purchased.

I have had to contend with juggling my day job with working on the shop and things have gotten pushed aside. I'll definitely need to do more now on the days I have off and the time I have before I need to head to work at the day job so I can get things ready. Wish me luck!

Goosebook + Christmas in July

I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday! Things have been super busy over here so I apologize for not updating sooner as I had promised.

I'll get right down to it and start with the big news first.

There is a new social networking site and it is small business friendly! I am personally tired of Facebook making changes that negatively affect small business owners like myself. Lately all Facebook has done is make changes that many of it's users hate. Their motivations are to please shareholders now that they have gone public. So Goosie Girl took matters into her own hands and created her own social networking site. About 70 people signed up in just the first 24 hours alone, and I was one of them. Businesses seeking membership are asked to pay a small $5 per year fee and regular profiles for non-business members are completely free! No "promoted posts" like on Facebook. Your posts will reach everyone who watches your profile and won't get hidden, unlike on Facebook. I'm excited to be a member and I am certain the site will only continue to grow.

Goosie has named the site domain mombition as many people who wanted to sign up in the original wave are mostly stay at home, self employed mom's, but EVERYONE is welcome to join! Christmas in July!

And with July comes Christmas! It's that time again so I've been working very hard to get some more Christmas themed items ready to post into the shop. I just listed two handmade jewelry items for Christmas in July the other day. Check out my Christmas Shop Section and stay tuned for more!

Love for Vintage

I did not know very much about "vintage" items when I was younger. Well, that's what I thought anyway. To me I grew up watching The Jeffersons on tv, Laverne and Sherley, Happy Days, etc and I knew they were old but I couldn't grasp the concept fully. I never fully understood the things I saw on there was not the way the world worked now. I am older now, 24 to be exact, and I've got a solid grasp on vintage items. I see the trends coming back into fashion.

 I continue to live with vintage items in my life and I will forever have a special place in my heart for those old TV shows. As my love for Vintage has grown I have been exposed to newer and better things.

 What's the latest thing?

 Vintage sewing patterns.

We now own tons of them, and they have been right under my nose, squirreled away in my nana's attic, basement, bedroom, back rooms, everywhere, and I didn't even know it! My mom and I can't get the full use out of them so when she proposed the idea for me to help her sell them on Etsy and Artfire I was happy to help. I love being able to handle these patterns before I list them and eventually package them to ship somewhere. I've actually sold quite a few to the U.K. and Australia, even Germany!

I want to share my love of vintage with others who are much more sewing savvy than myself. Recently we acquired three new patterns (ones I have not previously listed on Etsy or Artfire), and I thought I'd share them here with you. :)

 


The first is an Advance 1940s sewing pattern for a cobbler apron or poncho. This one is extra neat because whoever owned it before us made two extra pattern sets and they are included with the original. So there are now two small sewing patterns and one large! It's like three for the price of one. :)

The second pattern is a 1950s Simplicity pattern for a slim skirt in a waist size 32, hip size 41.

And the last one is from a brand I have not personally heard of before. It is a mail order Marian Martin 1940s sewing pattern for a skirt and blouse. This one is my personal favorite! I love the type of top this one makes. The pattern is for a size 38.

All three of these patterns are currently up for sale in my Etsy shop, and you can find them in my Vintage section.

Although I can't sew and produce vintage clothing, I have begun incorporating vintage supplies in my jewelry. Coming very soon I will be posting a super cute vintage button necklace. In the meantime though I have two gorgeous pairs of earrings up for grabs that are both one of a kind and are made using vintage buttons:

Happy Holidays and an Update

Hello everyone! I hope this post finds you all well and I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. To those enjoying a long weekend I hope it was a good one for you. :)

I would first off like to get into my absence. I apologize to everyone for lack of updates over the last several months. Toward the end of the summer going into the fall season I haven't been feeling myself. I have been in a long string of a depression funk, one I'm trying to pull myself out of. Things have been difficult for me and they finally escalated over the last month.

For those not in the know I still do live at home with both of my parents. Two weeks back there was something that happened between them and as you can all guess it affected me as well as my brother since we all do still live together. It hit me particularly hard. Naturally all these emotional blows left me falling behind on my orders through Etsy and Artfire. I had sold orders waiting on me since September that just shipped this last week. Before the problems between my parents though we had Halloween to deal with and the last week of October was hectic for me even though I was off from work. We have been in the process of moving for over 4 months now, give or take, so my dad's decision to have Halloween at the other house was a poor one. It meant my mom had to rent a box truck on a Saturday I was scheduled to work. I work nights so I sleep days. Naturally I didn't get to do more than snap a few pictures as they were moving things into the truck. Being carted back and forth from the old house to the new and back again was also a huge chore. I can't drive so it meant I had to have my mom bring me over. Lack of communication meant me missing a few days in the middle of the week.

Now that Thanksgiving has passed (which we had at the other house even though my brother and I still fully live at the old house) we are fast approaching Christmas. I haven't gotten to make any holiday pieces like I wanted for my shops because of all the nonsense going on and my emotional troubles. I also just got a brand new 10 week old kitten just two weeks ago (so he's now 12 weeks) so handling him and trying to work with hemp has been a chore, not to mention just having to get him adjusted to the new house, our other animals, and watching him in general. I have to say he's remarkably well behaved despite his bouts of zoomies here and there and his need to get into plastic bags and the garbage. I have been trying to get my room cleaned a little more each day so that he has more room to roam and I have more space to function in. I am going to try and see about carting some things to the new house but I don't know if that will happen.

My "day job" has also been extremely stressful. The overnight manager and two supervisors I work with are, for lack of a better word, assholes. Things came to a bit of a blowout between myself, the manager, and one of the supervisors several weeks ago. They made me an offer that I know they didn't think I could complete with the promise they would switch me from being one of the truck unloaders to the ad set team that changes the store signs. I met their challenge and they were forced to comply with switching me. The manager had no issues with it but the supervisor has been a real bitch to me because she no longer has me for truck nights (she's the supervisor for the truck). Just about every night I work with her now we butt heads at least once. Just my being there seems to agitate her to no end because I'm not on her truck team anymore.

Long story short I have caught up on my orders. I have one bracelet I need to alter, 7 pairs of my grape cluster glass pearl earrings to make for a custom order, and one vintage macrame belt and bag book to ship all before Christmas, so I have until the end of the week I believe to ship these for guaranteed pre-Christmas delivery.

I have so many pictures I want to upload and post here. Please bear with me though. I work pretty much every weekend now, Friday through Sunday (not always all three days but it pretty much turns out being at least 2 of the 3) plus several days during the week. I don't have a set schedule and because my truck supervisor, who also does the overnight schedules, hasn't yet put me under the ad set schedules, she usually doesn't get around to giving me my updated schedule for following weeks until Saturday nights and Sunday starts each new work week.

I still have shop listings to edit and update as that was about where I was when my activity died off. I still have all those new items to put up in my shop as well. For anyone who is on Etsy and has seen my shop please be aware that in my absence a lot of my listings expired. Over the weekend I posted a lot of them back up again just to boost up my shops stock. Over the next few weeks I will be re-listing the rest of the items two at a time, one vintage item and one of my handmade jewelry items. My Artfire shop is still fully stocked though, items never expire there.

As for sales I have a big Cyber Monday sale I'm going to post up now. I'm working on snatching up holiday themed beads though so perhaps I'll be making some stock for that throughout the year as well as next year's Christmas in July sales.

A last note to my Artfire buyer, I haven't yet had the opportunity to edit my new shipping prices into Artfire. Rest assured you WILL receive a refund for all overcharges in shipping once your payment is received and I have packaged and shipped your item. I don't like to issue refunds until I have shipped my packages due to the fact when I weigh my packages for shipping I try to estimate as best I can. It has happened in the past that the post office has charged me more than I thought when they re-weigh the item.

Stickers, Stickers, and more Stickers! + Item of the Day

My first apologies for not updating in a few days. There are many things going on in real life that have kept me from being able to update.

My family and I are in the process of moving to my grandmother's house. My parents have been actively trying to fix up the place for her for over two years now. Finally they hired a contractor to come in and redo the driveway and the sidewalk leading from the driveway to the front steps...but they botched it! The contractor never excavated the sidewalk and they botched the stonework that is to line both sides of the driveway. On top of that they butchered the sidewalk. They set the cement and black work right on top of dirt, not gravel as was requested vehemently by my parents, and to top it off when they set the cement they didn't put in good enough supports so the outside edge of the entire walkway is now wavy/scalloped. The surface is also highly pocketed and uneven and there are cracks and gaps in places where water can seep in. It's been a fiasco. I've even had to go and house sit as we have caught word from one of the bosses (who let it slip while talking to my dad) that some of the people have been coming to the house while we aren't there. We haven't moved in yet so my parents don't get to go over there until late afternoon when they both leave work.

However, I have been working on Threaded Chains as well. I have simply been working more days last week and also this week. Tonight and tomorrow are my last two days for the week and then I should hopefully have much more time to work on new pieces, update my shop fronts, and continue my renovations with the store. Thank you SO much to everyone who is hanging in there with me and being patient and supportive as I work hard on improving my customer service initiative and overall SEO and other aspects of my little business.

As promised though I have shiny new pictures for you! All orders are now wrapped and fancified, it's like receiving a little gift in the mail. I have taken great lengths to find stickers to use as seals on my tissue paper I use to wrap my items when they sell. I don't have any images of all the colors I have for tissue paper but I do have pics of my stickers!

This is just an overview of what I have. I left out some on mistake that I ordered from someone on Etsy. ):

And lastly here are some shots of my wrapping. Blue and red just happened to be the two colors of tissue paper I chose for the order I was shipping out the day I took these photos.

Every package is different and I never put two of the same stickers on packages within any order. For the time being all tissue paper that I use is being recycled from what I had used to stuff my mother's present bags for her birthday back in August. I used a TON of tissue paper (I not only stuffed the bags but I wrapped all her gifts inside the bags with it too) so I am now taking the opportunity to recycle it instead of allowing her to throw it away. She got neat gifts and I got to keep the 'garbage' so we're both happy, lol.
